Trout in the Classroom: Upcoming orientation for participants in the trout in the classroom program will be held on January 7th. The exact location is yet to be determined as the hatchery is under some construction and may be difficult to access. For those who have not taken the training, either teachers or volunteers, this class is mandatory as well as interesting and is provided by Dept. of Fish and Game. They also distribute some very good curricula for the teachers.
Some of our schools opted for getting salmon eggs for their tanks and got an earlier start. Deer Creek successfully released 27 fish in the Sacramento River and Sierra Streams Institute released 15 fish in the Feather River. Both of these schools overcame some difficulties suffered the previous year and turned the program around this year. Unfortunately, Union school would have had 50-60 fish to release, but lost power to the tank over a weekend and lost all of their fish just prior to their planned release. Successful releases do require constant attention and careful monitoring during the rearing process.
Five more schools will be receiving steelhead eggs probably sometime mid-February. We hope the volunteers and teachers get the necessary training during January and have successful releases for their students.
